Administration

“Whatever your task, work heartily, as serving the Lord …”

Colossians 3:23

First Christian Church of Lubbock is an autonomous congregation affiliated by covenant with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United Stated and Canada. Being autonomous, our congregation prayerfully calls its own ministers, hires its own employees, selects its leadership, chooses its mission emphasis, and sets its own budget without direction from any office or overseeing body outside our own church. Under direction of scripture, the congregation makes final decisions for its own governance.

Our covenant relationship with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) enables us to better support foreign and domestic mission programs, higher education, and area camp and conference centers. This affiliation also provides us a resource for clergy and lay minister continuing education, volunteer training, youth programs, and affordable access to wonderful camps and conference centers.

Governance

Through its Constitution and By-Laws, the congregation operates under the supervision of a General Board. This leadership body is elected by the membership and is composed equally of Elders, Deacons, and members at large. An Executive Committee is formed through this Board to oversee the various ministries of the church and to help set the agenda for the Board’s monthly meetings.

New Testament letters urged the appointment of leaders for a “noble task.” Those appointed were ordinary people chosen from rank-and-file first century Christians. Their appointments revealed an assertion of trust in their character for gifts in service and leadership. The present day offices of Deacon and Elder are part of the Restoration calling of the Christian Church. Our Deacons and Elders are called, elected, and ordained. Deacons primarily focus on service ministries while Elders generally see to priestly duties like communion and devotions and offer spiritual direction for the congregation.

The church relies on a professional staff headed by the Senior Minister. The daily business operation is under the direction of the Business Administrator. All departments of the church can be contacted at (806) 763-1995.
